The Struggle of Women in Lowell’s Patterns and Sorrell’s From a Correct Address Woman is not born, feminist Andrea Dworkin wrote. She is made. In the making, her humanity is destroyed. She becomes symbol of this, symbol of that: mother of the earth, slut of the universe; but she never becomes herself because it is forbidden for her to do so. Dworkin’s quote relates to women throughout history who have been forced to conform. Although women can be regarded highly in society, representing images of fertility, security, and beauty, many people still view them in stereotypical ways; some people believe that all women should act a certain way, never letting their true selves shine through. For example, she writes, The daffodils and squills / Flutter in the breeze / As they please. / And I weep (22-25); these lines imply that, although she can wander in her magnificent garden, objects inside of it cause her to feel grief because she realizes she can never be as free as the flowers. From a Correct Address in a Suburb of a Major City parallels Patterns in the fact that it also gives contrasting details of the woman’s life. The first clue that the woman in the poem is wealthy is the title. Since she lives not only in the suburbs, but also at a correct address, the title signifies that the woman’s household seems to be proper and wealthy. Another mention of her wealth appears in line four when the author writes, charming, proper at cocktails (4). Attending cocktail parties is not something a low or middle class woman normally does, so the reader infers that the woman lives an upper class life. In contrast to these details, the author gives descriptive details of the woman’s unhappiness. For instance, immediately after the line mentioning cocktails, Sorrells describes the woman in the poem as having her inner one raging and wondering how to hide her [inner self] (5-6). Descriptive Art History Essay Free Essays

Jade Richards-Butler Professor Jonathon Farris ARTH 100 Descriptive Essay This work resembles a four-legged animal wearing a mask with human features. It is a sculpture in the round created using an additive method. The smooth, highly polished texture and reddish colour of the sculpture give the impression that the material is ceramic. The ears are positioned symmetrically, slightly off center of the head. They are of a triangular shape and stand erect in a pointed manner resembling ears similar to those of some dog breeds. They are slightly concave and face frontwards. Around the face there is a raised layer of the material creating the illusion that a mask has been superimposed onto the sculpture. The â€Å"mask† is a slightly different colour than the head and covers what would be the sculpture’s face. Right in the center of the â€Å"mask† are human features. The eyebrows are slightly raised and low set, sitting unusually close to the eyes. The eyes protrude slightly from their sockets. They are almond shaped with incisions outlining the eyeballs. The top of the nose begins between the two eyes, lengthwise it occupies about a third of the â€Å"mask†. It is highly protruding with a sharply defined bridge. Under the nose there are two raised areas denoting lips. There is an indentation representing the space in between the lips, which is curved slightly upwards suggesting a smile. The ears sit half way down the â€Å"mask†, they are proportional to the mask features with slightly exaggerated ear lobes. There is a hole in the right lobe that appears to be an artistic choice rather than a preservation problem. The inner edges of the hole seem scratched, perhaps there was previously an item sitting in the hole. The front legs are short in comparison to the rest of the body. There is an outward bend half way down each leg. The base of the legs taper off slightly, resembling paws. There are three equally distributed indentations on each paw, the indentations span from the where the legs begin to taper to the tip of the paws. These indentations delineate toes on the paws. The stomach is not in proportion with the rest of the body as it is quite wide and sits slightly off the ground. It is a bulbous shape and suggests that the dog is overweight. This could be a signal of the domestication of this particular breed of dog. The breed was probably native to the area of the artwork and consequently domesticated, serving as companions to humans. The rotundness may suggest that they were pampered, idolized animals. Unlike the two front legs, the two back legs are completely straight. They do not have bends or indentations to resemble paws, instead they slightly flare out towards the bottom. The tail also does not resemble the tail of any known animal. In proportion to the rest of the statue the tail is extremely wide. It is rounded and appears hollowed out. It appears to be diagonally sliced downwards, the highest point being at the back of the tail. This suggests the sculpture could have a dual purpose as an ornament and a storage vessel. The tail could be an opening to a hollowed out stomach that would provide an appropriate storage facility for grain or liquid. The sculpture’s purpose of creation could be symbolic of shamanism. The mixed representations of human and animal features are possibly the artist’s way of exploring the relationship between these life forms. The human mask could be demonstrating the shamanist practices in which animal spirits work in harmony with a human host through ritualistic trance states. In summary it could be concluded that the artwork could be used both for decorative purposes and for a deeper spiritual use within the rituals of its social setting. This insight will prove useful in writing your essay, as it will help you convey to the organization that you are worthy of receiving a scholarship.Start setting goals for your essay There are usually specific points or ideas that you should try to get across in your essay, so it would be est to list those items so that you can start creating an outline. Start filling in your outline one step at a time.To avoid writers block, allow yourself to write badly, keeping in mind that the first draft WILL NOT be perfect. Here re some tips for putting things together: Introduction The purpose of the introduction is to invite and entice your reader to continue reading your work. This can be achieved by posing a question, or stating an interesting fact that is relevant to the rest of your essay. Starting with an interesti ng, relevant quote can be a great way to begin as well. You should also introduce your theme at this time. However, do not summarize the piece here. Example: l am a literacy volunteer.I did not decide to do this work because studies report that 21 % of adults (over 40 million) in this country are functionally illiterate or ecause 43% of people with reading deficiencies live in poverty or even because 70% of people with reading deficiencies have no job or only a part time job. My reason for becoming a literacy volunteer was much simpler. My Dad couldnt read. (Taken from ScholarshipHelp. org) The example above is successful because it entices the reader to read further by stating interesting facts, and leading them in to the rest of the story.Also, the author successfully introduces her main point: that she, inspired by her own fathers struggles with illiteracy, seeks to help others who are also illiterate. Body Now its time to craft the bulk of your essay. This is where your outline will come in handy because it is a blueprint of what each paragraph of your body will address. Follow your outline, and be mindful of making transitions from paragraph to paragraph, so that your essay maintains a singular flow. Show your reader where they are going and why.You should try repeating prior thoughts, and connecting them to the next point. Avoid using such standard phrases as Secondly or As a consequence if possible. (From ScholarshipHelp. org) Here, the author ties up any loose ends left over from he introduction while re-iterating his/her main point; without going into a summary of the entire piece. 3/5 Things to Keep in Mind Throughout the Process Here are some things that you will want to think about as you are writing the essay: Am I staying on topic? † When you are asked to write the scholarship essay you will always be provided with a theme or instructions to follow. Read these instructions very carefully AT LEAST TWICE. You want to be sure that you remain consistent with your writing, and that you can always tie your thoughts to the main Idea. The essay is really all about you Although you ay be writing about a given topic, the judges really want to know about you, your ideals, and/or your opinions. Make sure that, ultimately, your own viewpoints come across in whatever you write, so that the judges can get an idea Of who you are and why you deserve the scholarship.Am I writing too much? Too little? There is a common misconception that if you write more than is required by the scholarship application that your essay will be viewed in a more favorable light. Often, that is not the case. When there are set words or page limits, adhere to them strictly. Write an essay of 500 words or ess really means Dont write anything longer than 500 words. Stay within the set guidelines, and your application wont earn a one-way ticket to the rejection pile. Dont thesaurize Simply put, complex words have their place. use them sparingly. Trying to use too many big words in your essay can backfire, as the more obscure your vocabulary becomes, the harder it is to read. Revising the Essay Review After completing your first draft, let the essay sir for a while. Come back to it a little later on, and read through it with a fresh set of eyes. Review the essay for any grammatical and/or spelling errors. Then, look over the content for things you like, and for things that you could improve upon. Use your outline as a guide to make sure that you stuck to your goals and addressed each of your points, but do not be afraid to rearrange things as you see fit to make the essay read better. Have it proof-read Once you have reviewed the essay yourself, have others read it. You may visit the Writing Lab or use your teachers to help you edit your essay. Another set of eyes may catch errors that you missed, and they may provide valuable insight. Make any necessary revisions, and finally RELAX!! Youve just completed the most challenging portion of your application.Give yourself a pat on the back, and enjoy the fact that the most difficult part is over.
